CASE NARRATIVE

Issue and Opponent: In 2009, Greenpeace International focused on Asia Pulp and Paper, which worked in the heart of the Indonesian forest, and launched its “Asia Pulp & Paper under Investigation” campaign. Dilemma Action: On November 25, “Thirteen Greenpeace activists locked down cranes at Asia Pulp and Paper’s main port, attaching themselves to dangling crane cables. Outcomes: All thirteen activists were ultimately arrested, and the last four activists occupied one of the cranes for twenty-seven hours. The action was followed by Greenpeace reports showing the company’s unlawful practices and posted them on their website. Various actions to target APP continued, and eventually, in 2013, they announced they would end deforestation and work to sustainably source their paper. Greenpeace is an organization dedicated to climate action.
