CASE NARRATIVE

Issue/Opponent: The Barbie Liberation Organization was a group of artists and activists that were involved in culture jamming. They were conceived to question and change the gender stereotypes that American culture is known for. In 1993, Barbie was seen as a negative image of women in academic and popular culture. To create a different image of GI dolls and Barbie dolls the Barbie Liberation Organization wanted to set a new standard and create a different image since these dolls were creating a negative image all over the country. Dilemma Action: The Barbie Liberation Organization performed very detailed surgeries on G.I dolls and Barbie dolls to change what they were saying. By doing this, they did some technical skills, tools, and precision to the dolls to maintain the voice sound the same. After the surgeries, they would return the toys to toy shelves in what they called reverse shoplifting. They also produced a video to explain their point by using a familiar form of the nightly news message, cutting the video with art techniques to be able to get their point across. People would be unable to tell exactly what was news and what was made up. They also recruited two children, one from San Diego and one from New York to showcase the modified toys. Outcome: It is unknown how many actual dolls were switched and bought, but it brought various news outlets to cover the story and gain media attention, but also it went beyond the activities and gained attention from more people. The dilemma action did reframe the narrative of the opponent since people were in support of the message behind the normative gender roles that were being set in place during the 1990s. The Barbie Liberation Organization did not fear to do these detailed surgeries on the dolls. Toys in Canada, France, and England were also hacked with these surgeries.
