CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponents: Russia and China had just vetoed the UN Security Council resolution that was intended to force the Syrian government to stop the violence against its citizens. This activity was targeting the government of Syria.
Dilemma Action: In October 2011, Ahmed Zaino tossed orange ping pong balls with Hurriyah! (“freedom”) or “You and I, still brothers” written on them down the streets of Damascus, which required the police and military force to chase after the ping pong balls to collect them, using humor to offer Syrians strength and a sense of hope. The messages written on them were aimed at persuading soldiers to switch sides. This resistance was too small because it needed more people and more participation, which was difficult to achieve in Syria.
Outcomes: In 2012, Syrian security forces threatened Zaino with death if he ever returned to Syria. No concessions were made. This was part of a larger campaign that continued to use humor to achieve its goals.
