Oil company profits are not more important than people.
CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: Fossil fuel companies disregard human life for profits. A conference of 300 oil company reps was intended to simply focus on more corporate greed. The Yes Men wanted to disrupt that. Dilemma Action: Impersonating Exxon officials Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno told the conference that the real solution to climate change was simply to turn everyone who dies into fuel so that the all-important free market could continue to work well past doomsday. They then described the human-rendering technology that would make corporate survival possible. As volunteers passed out flesh-scented candles, a funeral tribute played for an Exxon janitor named Reggie Watts (played by the real Reggie Watts), who had graciously donated his body to be turned into candles as a test of the Vivoleum concept.
Outcomes: Security guards dragged Bichlbaum away from the reporters, and he and Bonanno were detained until Calgary Police Service officers could arrive. The policemen, determining that no major infractions had been committed, permitted the Yes Men to leave. The incident got widespread media coverage.
