CASE NARRATIVE

Issues and Opponent: Dr. Patrick Michaels of the Cato Institute, who has received covert funds to advance a climate denier position and support the fossil fuel industry, was scheduled to speak at Swarthmore. Dilemma Action: During his lecture Swarthmore Students for Scientific Industrial Progress (SSSIP) peacefully “awarded Michaels a certificate of excellence in corporate climatology, applauding his continued information laundering on behalf of dirty energy interests.” “During the lecture preceding the humorous award, student protestors held up signs detailing Michaels’ vested financial ties to giant corporations like ExxonMobil and Koch Industries. The signholders hands were stained an oily black as a reminder of the continuing effects of the BP oil spill.” Purportedly, Michaels said “that Americans will believe anything that a man in a suit says,” not realizing that the entire setup was a ruse to delegitimize his authority and bring attention to the more significant issue. Outcomes: Michaels seemed to never get the prank, which made him look like an even bigger dupe. The action helped draw attention to the fact that Michaels’ industry-sponsored manipulation of pseudo-science is a conflict-of-interest sham that directly fuels corporate profit and climate injustice. Michaels continued to work for Cato.
