CASE NARRATIVE

Issue and Opponent: In 2014, Fidel and Raul, two prominent political leaders in Cuba, along with the rest of the Cuban government, were creating countless human rights violations against their population.
Dilemma Action: On December 25, 2014, Danilo Maldonado Machado, who called himself “El Sexto” painted the names “Fidel” and “Raul” on two piglets in bright red letters. It is customary in Cuba between Christmas and New Year’s to release pigs that will be kept by anyone who can catch them. Banking on this custom, El Sexto was planning on releasing them in a plaza in Havana to call attention to the harsh, repressive nature of the Cuban government.
Outcomes: The pigs were never allowed to be released, as El Sexto was stopped by state security officers before he could reach the plaza. He was imprisoned under contempt but was not given a trial. His sentence was three years in prison. This case gained significant international attention, specifically after El Sexto went on a hunger strike in the prison. Amnesty International named him a prisoner of conscience. He was finally released after ten months, but the Cuban government remains the same.
