TARGET

Bengaluru govt./ civic authority

WIDELY HELD BELIEF

The civic authority of Bengaluru is responsible for fixing potholes and any infrastructural malfunctions in the city. City did not care for the safety of its people.

CASE NARRATIVE

Issue and Opposition: The Bengaluru roads were in deplorable condition in 2015. The potholes made it impossible to drive through the city, especially after heavy rainfall. They also contributed to road accidents for motorists and pedestrians alike. Roads linked to the railway station, main streets, and roads connecting several major landmarks in the city became inaccessible due to the potholes during the monsoon. The condition of the streets had deteriorated so much that potholes became a critical election issue. But appealing to the politicians and the civic authority yielded no positive outcome. The potholes of Bengaluru continued to exist and no induction by the city administration was made about fixing them. To embarrass the civic authority and to ensure that it took appropriate and timely actions to resolve the problem, a dilemma action was planned by a local artist. This dilemma action was part of a larger campaign against the civic body of Bengaluru.
Dilemma Action: A local artist named Baadal Nanjundaswamy painted a giant pothole on the Sulthanpalya main road in north Bengaluru Green. Additionally, he put a life-sized fiber crocodile in the painting. This gave the impression that the crocodile was emerging from a pond. to make it look like a pond. On another street, he painted a giant pothole framed by the face of Lord Yama, the god of death in Hinduism.
Outcome: This dilemma action had a happy ending. The images went viral on social media and put considerable pressure on the city administration and the state government. The civic authority succumbed to the pressure and criticism and within the next 24 hours, the massive pothole on the Sulthanpalya main road was fixed.
