CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: Thousands of migrant deaths occur as a consequence of an increasingly militarized border between the United States and Mexico. Fences and walls, solid and virtual, have funneled people in migration deeper into the harsh, dangerous terrain of the Sonoran desert, resulting in more than 5,000 deaths since 1994. Due to the high surveillance and the construction of more towers, people have had to find practically inaccessible points to cross the border, making the journey even more dangerous. The protesters demanded “the end of the unilateral slaughter” and “the end of militarization in all its guises.” Dilemma Action: Activists John Heid and Fr. Jerry Zawada held vigils and prayers near the construction site of a virtual tower, which has long been used to control immigrants entering the United States from the border with Mexico. The two men prayed for peace and justice for the thousands of people who have been cruelly killed at the border. The site they visited is only one of seventeen towers in a 23-mile stretch of the border. They both are members of the “No More Deaths” community, an Arizona-based advocacy group that seeks to end the string of deaths of undocumented immigrants crossing desert regions near the US-Mexico border. Outcome: Both individuals were arrested and charged with trespassing. The. U.S. government refuses to take any responsibility for all these casualties, which are considered one of the unintended consequences of the nation’s effort to protect its sovereignty. For 2022, the Department of Homeland Security budget for border protection goes around $1.2 billion and includes the modernization of security technology and assets.
