CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: Ukrainians were told in 2005 that Ukraine was not a state and that their president was Putin and Yanukovych. They were also told not to believe the third round of elections for a new president.
Dilemma Action: Activists of the “Student Brotherhood in Ukraine” held their action outside the Russian embassy and in Sevastopol. About 200 students picketed outside the Russian embassy, waving placards that said “You can’t ruin a friendship with gas.” In Sevastopol, students picketed the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and demanded to see lease agreements on Ukrainian territory. Stickers saying “Remember about gas– do not buy Russian goods” appeared in Kirovograd overnight on December 22-23, 2005.
Outcomes: There was no documented response from the Russian government or Putin regarding these protests. There is no evidence of concessions being made or punishments for the activists. It is documented that those inside the Russian embassy at the time of the protests watched out the windows but did not interact with the protestors.
