CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: Before current President Faure came to power, his father occupied the President’s office for almost four decades after staging a coup in 1967 and taking power. Faure Gnassingbe came to power in 2005 shortly after his father’s death. Leading Togo had now become a family legacy. Recent electoral reforms would make it easier for President Faure Gnassingbe to be re-elected in the upcoming October. Determined to prevent this from happening, the women who were part of a civil rights activism and opposition group in Togo decided to go on a sex strike to put pressure on their husbands/male partners to take the initiative and protest harder against the government. They also demanded the freedom of protesters who were detained before the election. Dilemma Action: Togolese women withheld sex from their husbands and male partners demanding a free and fair presidential election. This special non-cooperation tactic was run and coordinated by the female wing of a civil rights group in Togo. The call to not offer sex to their male partners was to last a whole week to accentuate the Togolese women’s demands for the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbe. The civil rights activists thought that, despite a poor show by the President, most Togolese men were not doing enough to aggravate protests against the president or to oust him from his office. It was hoped that a sex strike would put pressure on the Togolese men to increase their protests against the President. This strike was part of a larger campaign to force Gnassingbe to resign and bring back free and fair elections. Outcome: The change of regime did not take place as Gnassingbe was re-elected. However, the sex strike did gain media attention and drew viewers of various media outlets to consider the problems occurring in Togo with the current regime.
