Delhi Govt. and the Planning Comittee for the Comonwealth Games
WIDELY HELD BELIEF
Govt. should answer for infrastructural malfunction and citizen distress resulting from it.
CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opposition: New Delhi roads are highly mismanaged. India hosted the Commonwealth Games in October 2010. Although the Delhi government got ample chance to raise the required infrastructure, procrastination, and corruption ensured that nothing was ready even when this international event was imminent. At that point, the best that the Delhi government could do was to put up STOP signs everywhere indicating that different routes need to be taken by cars, buses, and other modes of road transportation. This created a lot of chaos but the signs were not taken down. This absence of proper infrastructure and planning led to a lot of anger among the public. Daku, a graffiti artist with a status like that of Banksy, took this opportunity to protest against the corrupt practices and inefficiencies of the Delhi government, particularly those government officials who formed the Planning Commission for the Commonwealth Games. Although corruption in different levels of government is a steady concern among Indians and over the years there have been many campaigns, this particular action was not a part of a larger campaign.
Dilemma Action: Daku added words such as “bribery” and “corruption” under the word STOP on the stop roadsigns in Delhi, thus giving a twist to the mundane signage language.
Outcome: The dilemma action created some media attraction. Delhi residents found it funny. However, the action resulted in no other outcome.
