CASE NARRATIVE

Issue and Opponent: Groups of white nationalists and neo-Nazis are growing, planning rallies, and recruiting people into their ranks in various cities in the United States. In Olympia, Washington in 2005, a dozen members of the National Socialist Movement, a far-right, Neo-Nazi and white supremacist organization based in the United States, paraded around the state capitol to recruit members for the coming “race war.” This organization uses violence to legitimize its views, attract more people to the movement, and gain media coverage. Dilemma Action: Hundreds of counter-demonstrators have decided to use clown costumes to combat the demonstrations of these hate groups, making a public mockery of their songs and slogans. They call themselves the Coup Clutz Clowns. They turned the occasion into a celebration of diversity and unity, thereby, diverting the attention of passers-by from the National Socialist Movement demonstrations. The humorous element was meant to draw out how ridiculous they look in Nazi outfits, performing the salutes and chants that this group used to perform. These groups have sought to combat the violent actions of extreme right groups with humor and mockery, showing that the use of violence is unnecessary. Outcome: The main consequence has been that the Neo-Nazi groups have stopped the demonstrations earlier than planned and have not been able to get as much attention, reducing the possibility of distributing their message and getting more people on their movement. Despite Olympia’s success in stopping the rally ahead of schedule, white supremacist groups have staged marches in other cities and states.
