Bashar al Assad's Government, Russia and China veto in the UNSC

WIDELY HELD BELIEF

Violence from government forces should stop.

CASE NARRATIVE

Issue and Opponent: The escalation of crimes and killings of civilians by the government of Bashar al-Assad provoked protests, especially among the young population of Syria. Following Russia and China’s veto of a UN Security Council resolution condemning the Assad regime’s violent repression, the demonstrations intensified.
Dilemma Action: The protestors added red dye to all 7 major fountains in Damascus, including one which sits in front of the most feared intelligence services, to represent the 5,000+ people that were killed by security forces. They referred to the red water as the “blood of martyrs” who died at the hand of the violent security forces. This act reminded citizens of Damascus of those who were dying across Syria while they were peacefully driving around the fountains.
Outcome: This demonstration allowed the protesters to continue with other forms of expression, however, President Bashar al-Assad continues to rule Syria. It was part of the larger campaign, the “Calendar of Freedom,” to protest the Assad regime.
