CASE NARRATIVE
Issue and Opponent: In 1849, Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, California was sold to the U.S. to have the first permanent army detachment. From 1934 to 1963, the island served as a prison for the most dangerous civilian prisoners. In March of 1964, Native Americans were on a mission to break into Alcatraz after the island had shut down in 1963. Native Americans were determined to get back to the island and have it redeveloped as an Indian cultural center and school. Dilemma Action: From November 20, 1969, to June 11, 1971 thousands of Native Americans occupied the abandoned remains of the island. 89 men, women, and children showed up on the island with no intention to leave. They moved into the warden’s house and guard’s quarters and began to do graffiti on the island. They wrote a message on the water tower that said “Peace and Freedom. Welcome. Home Of The Free Indian Land.” and also wrote other slogans on other buildings on the island. Outcome: In 1973 Alcatraz Island was opened as a national park where all the graffiti that was done by the Native Americans can still be seen. The Island has exemplified history and is open to the public so people can go and see it.
