CASE NARRATIVE

Issue and Opponent: More than any U.S. war since the Civil War, Vietnam divided the opinions in America. By any standard, the American effort in Southeast Asia was a major conflict. By 1954, the U.S. contributions were providing 80% of the cost of the war, between North and South Vietnam, after the French occupation. American presence rose to 500 under Eisenhower and grew to 15,000 under Kennedy. The similarity between the French and the U.S. forces in Vietnam was, from the Vietnamese point of view, more than that both were foreign oppressors. The American people were not being told of the plans or the policies of the U.S. Civilian casualties from U.S. actions ran from 100,000 in 1965 up to 300,000 in 1968, just from bombing and artillery. In addition, millions upon millions of gallons of herbicides were sprayed over 6 million acres of land. For the first time in American history, veterans came home from war and said “This war’s got to stop”. In 1967, the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) organization started several actions to fight for peace, justice, and the rights of all veterans. The protests were part of a movement in opposition to the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War. Dilemma Action: In the summer of 1971, VVAW joined the demonstrations calling for immediate American withdrawal. The organization started different actions, including the staging of a guerrilla theater to simulate search and destroy tactics across the capital city, especially in the most famous spots full of tourists. The goal of this demonstration was to represent the violence that was occurring in Vietnam due to the US intervention. The soldiers passed out leaflets to the astonished tourists saying “A US Infantry platoon just passed through here! If you had been Vietnamese … we might have burned your house. We might have shot your dog. We might have shot you … HELP US END THE WAR BEFORE THEY TURN YOUR SON INTO A BUTCHER OR A CORPSE.”’ Outcomes: The VVAW campaign was one of many actions from different groups to pressure the US government to stop the Vietnam War. VVAW is an organization that works together until this day. Despite sustained intervention, the United States lost the war, and thousands of soldiers were killed or seriously injured.
